To feed is to resist: the struggle of the Nambikwara people for the right to traditional and healthy food

The Nambikwara people, originally from the Brazilian Cerrado, preserve a rich food tradition based on sustainable agriculture, the gathering of native fruits and seasonal hunting and fishing. Their way of eating is a deep link to the land and to their ancestral identity.

But this right is under threat. Surrounded by the advance of agribusiness, the Nambikwara face difficulties in growing their food safely. The intensive use of agrochemicals and deforestation around the indigenous land affect soils, springs and jeopardise their health and food sovereignty.

Since 2022, the Amazonas Institute, with the support of the Croda Foundation, has joined forces with the community, supporting food security initiatives and rescuing traditional production. These include community gardens, agroecological plots and actions that strengthen the autonomy and well-being of the Nambikwara.

Protecting traditional food means defending life, culture and the Cerrado.
